What Cannot Go in a Rental Dumpster in Ontario
Certain materials are prohibited from disposal in rental dumpsters and disposal bins under Ontario Regulation 347 and municipal bylaws. Placing these items in a bin can result in load rejection, surcharge fees, or environmental fines. This guide covers what is prohibited, why, and where to dispose of each item in the Greater Toronto Area.

Paint, stains, and solvents
Oil-based and latex paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals. They are classified as hazardous waste under Ontario Regulation 347.
Where to dispose: Drop off at a local municipal Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depot. Most GTA municipalities offer free paint drop-off at community recycling centres.
Chemicals, cleaners, and pesticides
Industrial and household chemicals can react, release toxic fumes, or contaminate soil and groundwater.
Where to dispose: Take to a municipal HHW depot. Do not pour down drains or mix with other chemicals.
Batteries (all types, including car batteries)
Batteries contain lead, lithium, cadmium, and other heavy metals. They can leak or catch fire when damaged or crushed in a disposal bin.
Where to dispose: Drop off at battery recycling locations (Call2Recycle drop-off points at most hardware stores), or at a municipal HHW depot for car batteries.
Appliances containing refrigerants (fridges, freezers, AC units)
Refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs) are regulated under Ontario environmental law. They must be recovered by a certified technician before disposal.
Where to dispose: Contact the manufacturer, retailer take-back program, or a municipal appliance recycling depot. Some GTA municipalities offer curbside appliance pickup by appointment.
Tires (on or off rims)
Tires are regulated under Ontario Tire Regulation 225/07 and must be recycled through registered tire collectors, not landfilled.
Where to dispose: Drop off at a registered Ontario Tire Stewardship collection site. Most tire retailers and some municipal depots accept tires free of charge.
Electronics and e-waste (TVs, computers, monitors)
Electronics contain lead, mercury, and other hazardous materials. Ontario Regulation 347 requires separate handling and recycling.
Where to dispose: Drop off at an Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) collection site or participate in retailer take-back programs (Best Buy, Staples).
Medical waste and sharps
Biohazardous materials risk infection to waste handlers and contaminate entire loads.
Where to dispose: Use a licensed biomedical waste disposal service. Sharps must be in approved puncture-proof containers.
Asbestos and asbestos-containing materials
Asbestos is a designated substance under Ontario Regulation 278/05. Disturbance and disposal require certified abatement professionals.
Where to dispose: Hire a licensed asbestos abatement contractor. Never place asbestos in a rental bin or regular garbage.
Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders
Pressurized cylinders can explode during transport or compaction at transfer stations, causing serious injury.
Where to dispose: Return to the retailer or supplier. Many hardware stores and gas stations accept propane tank exchanges. Municipal HHW depots also accept small cylinders.
Gasoline, oil, and other flammable liquids
Flammable liquids create fire and explosion risks during transport and processing.
Where to dispose: Take to a municipal HHW depot in an approved, labeled container. Never mix fuels or leave containers open.
Items That Are Allowed but May Incur Surcharges
Some items are not prohibited but carry additional fees due to recycling or special handling requirements. Always check with your vendor before loading:
- Mattresses and box springs ($15 to $50 per item surcharge)
- Refrigerators without refrigerants (certified degassed)
- Railway ties and creosote-treated wood
- Large tree stumps (weight surcharge may apply)
- Dirt and sod (clean fill rate may apply instead of mixed waste)
